Using Google Meet to conduct a video meeting can consume an awful lot of data. Luckily, there are ways to minimize your data usage and still maintain an optimal video experience. If you are an administrator in a school or nonprofit organization, you may be considering limiting video bandwidth. Here are some of the ways you can save your budget while still providing an excellent experience.

The default high-quality video quality setting in Google Meet is 720p. This provides a decent resolution, but it also uses a lot of data. If you’re on a limited bandwidth plan, 360p is a better choice. It uses only half the bandwidth required for high-quality video, but it offers a higher quality image.
Depending on your network connection, Google Meet will use anywhere from 2.4 megabytes to 2.6 megabytes for inbound signals and 3.2 megabytes for outbound signals. For HD video calls, it will use 1.4 gigabytes of data per hour. For standard definition video, it will consume 0.9 gigabytes per hour. This means that a large portion of your internet data quota will be wasted.
You can limit the amount of data you use for your video meeting by setting a data usage limit. The limit can be configured in the Google Meet app, in the Google Apps for Work dashboard, and in your browser. By default, the limit is turned off, but you can enable it if you’re outside and your battery is low. You can also turn it on when you’re in a Wi-Fi spot where you’re not getting an adequate signal.
The limit is designed to limit your uplink data usage to one Mbps, but it may not be sufficient to meet your video conferencing needs. You may need to test your connection or even upgrade to a higher-speed internet plan. A faster connection will help you avoid the lag and buffering you may experience with low-quality video.
You can also limit the bandwidth you use by reducing the resolution of the video you are transmitting. Lower-quality video will require less data, but it may not be as crisp as higher-quality video. If you’re attending a sporting event, for instance, you might want to use a lower bitrate. If you’re talking to someone at your desk, you can use a lower bitrate to avoid data-buffering. However, if you’re streaming a concert, you may want to use a higher bitrate.
In addition to the data-limiting feature, Google Meet also has an app for mobile devices. The app will automatically switch to a cellular data connection if you’re not getting a strong Wi-Fi signal. When your device is in this mode, you can still see all the other activities in the app, but the video quality will be lower.
As you can see, Google Meet is a popular video conferencing application, but if you’re trying to save your budget, you may want to think about limiting your video bandwidth. You can minimize the amount of data you use for your meeting by reducing the resolution, changing the size of your meeting window, and choosing the best video quality settings.
